Commemorations of the 650 Years of the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance
Events
30 November 21

Portugal-UK 650 is the initiative to commemorate the 650th anniversary of the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance, the oldest alliance in the world between two nations still in force. The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance, based on the perpetual friendship between the two countries, was first given formal expression by the signing of the Treaty of Tagilde in 10 July 1372, which was consolidated by the signing of the Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Alliance in London, 16 June 1373 between Edward III of England and Fernando I and Leonor of Portugal.

This initiative had its genesis and is based at the University of Oxford, and garners the support of the civil, military and religious authorities of both countries. At present, Portugal-UK 650 gathers more than 70 partner institutions, including authorities and civil society. In addition to the celebration of the most important dates – the 650 years of the Treaty of Tagilde, on 10 July 2022 and the Treaty of Alliance on 16 July 2023 – it includes other initiatives such as research, education, cultural, cooperation and social activities.

As part of the celebrations, Wines of Portugal organizes, on November 30th, a Masterclass at Cambridge University led by Master of Wine Dirceu Vianna Júnior.
