Casa Ermelinda Freitas was elected European Producer of the Year 2019 at the Sommelier Wine Awards (SWA) which is held every year in England. This is the first time this distinction has been atributted to a Portuguese still wine producer, the same award has already been given to a Madeira wine producer. Portugal collected 20 gold medals, 29 silver medals and 11 bronze medals in the Sommelier Wine Awards 2019. Among the 113 medals attributed to thePortuguese wines, the wine Barros, White Port NV from Douro wine region was distinguished with the Critics’ Choice medal, accredited to the best fortified wine of the competition. The Sommelier Wine Awards is a wine competition aimed only at wines available on the British market. Since it began in 2007, it has grown to become the first reference point for UK wine buyers, as well as the key competition for wines trying to increase their presence in hotels, pubs, bars and restaurants.
