From March 17 to 19, Portuguese wines will participate at the world's largest wine fair, ProWein, which will be held in Dusseldorf, Germany. The Prime Minister, António Costa, will visit this fair on 17 March and contact with more than 300 Portuguese producers who are attending the fair.
The Wines of Portugal are very popular in Germany right now, that’s why this event has the strong presence of Portuguese producers. Overall, Portugal is the 5th most represented country in ProWein, with a total of 383 exhibitors. Portuguese wines are increasingly a trend in international markets. According to a study developed in 2018 by the University of Geisenheim for ProWein, about a quarter of the German specialist’s surveyed plan to include Portuguese wines in their portfolio in the future. Extending the scope of analysis, the study reveals that one in five specialized retailers and importers of wine places Portugal at the top of its priorities to complement the range of products in its portfolio, which makes Portugal for the first time the top of preferences of Central European retailers and importers. During ProWein, journalists, importers, retailers and sommeliers will have the opportunity to enjoy wines from more than 150 producers gathered at the ViniPortugal stand or visit the stands of the various national wine regions present at the event - Vinho Verde, Porto and Douro, Tejo, Alentejo, Beira Interior and Bairrada. "Visitors who do not have much time available or who want to get an overview of Portuguese wines are invited to go through our free tasting area where they will have the opportunity to taste more than 80 wines awarded in competitions and tastings," says Jorge Monteiro, ViniPortugal CEO. This year ViniPortugal, through the "Wines of Portugal" brand, offers a free tasting area and a vast program of seminars, where you can learn more about trends, such as harmonizing Portuguese wines and international gastronomy, ancestral methods of winemaking, novelties and highlights of the wine regions. Sommelier Christina Fischer and chef Patrick Jabs will present suggestions for harmonizing Portuguese wines with dishes at the seminar "Great food companions - Portugal's wine world from A to Z". The specialist in Portuguese wines and journalist David Schwarzwälder will present the main highlights of Portugal as a wine country, discussing the different terroir structures and the particularities of each region. The seminar "Marked by the Atlantic Ocean - from the Vinho Verde to the Algarve", conducted by Caro Maurer MW, will address the dominant influence of the Atlantic Ocean in the various wine regions. In addition to these four specialists, another 17 events will be held under the banner "Wines of Portugal" to highlight the country's winemaking reality, led by Sofia Salvador, Rubina Vieira, Andrzej Strzelczyk, Joel B. Payne, Carine Patrício and Konstantin Baum MW.
